So many things I wish you knew, but there was one in particular that was constantly nagging at my mind as I rode the bus from Montreal to Toronto in the middle of the night. The Original Swifty, the Outspoken One, was going to be in the MuchMusic building for an hour. Half of that time she would dedicate to an interview while the other half would be devoted to the fans. That’s why I was riding a bus all night to spend all day waiting for 5pm. She’s always have this very close connection to the Taylor Nation. And every Swiftie around the world knows she loves the emotional, crazy, loud fans. There were many in attendance of those, with a lot of creativity. It’s worth going just to see what someone is going to come up with.
Please don’t have someone else waiting on you, is what a lot of fans wanted to tell Taylor. Who starts waiting from before the crack of dawn for someone they will only see for 30 minutes? This crowd. I had just stepped out of the bus when I felt the need to explore the surroundings at 6:30am of a cold morning before the sun has even managed to come out. What I saw seemed to be bundles of bedsheets and quilts that kept the earliest Swiftie arrivals from some, but I bet not all, of the cold of the street. Dedication at its finest. I knew I had not slept for a day and a night and knew that I was not getting any sleep now. Still, I forced myself to go to my hotel and get a shower and a breakfast before the long wait started for me.
Enchanted to meet you, was the thought as Swifties ran into each other and saw each other’s creativity with signs, T-shirts (or Tay shirts if you prefer) and other hand crafted artwork. This was another of the event’s highlights for me as I got to see people go deep into the Fearless One’s lyrics and past inside jokes. The classic Junior Jewels hand-made shirt from You Belong With Me. A girl in a banana suit. The guy asking Taylor for the prom (already been done in Taylor’s 13-hour Meet & Greet, right?). When @NaomiSwift13 and her friends showed up and the Taylorspeak became serious. I wouldn’t know until the day after that @Taylorpwnskanye was standing next to us! Shoutouts to both from us at The Swift Agency. It was awesome to meet you all.
And I’m hiding in the curtains, was the theme MuchMusic was going for on the evening of November 4th. MuchMusic usually interviews people and you can see it from the street, but instead the idea was a more intimate interview meaning hiding Taylor from her fans until the last moment. We were not going to be able to see the interview at all. This would be one of things that didn’t quite appealed to everyone once they learned it. The T-shaped corridor that was made so that Taylor could walk and meet the fans surrounding it seemed like a cool idea but I didn’t see how, with all the numbers of fans gathered outside this was going to happen in such a relatively short period of time.
Kiss me on the sidewalk take away the pain, could be said after so many hours of waiting when we were let into the closed side street. There was only one thing in the entire street, and that was the enclosed T-shaped corridor that became the focus of everyone’s attention. Organizers kept repeating themselves over and over when they talked to us, don’t push each other but something was already clear. The fans that were up front were meeting Taylor. The fans in the back would get a glimpse. I know MuchMusic was trying a new format, but hiding the interview was just hyping up Taylor’s appearance. Probably what they wanted, but then how do you meet Taylor if you’re in the back without pushing to try to get to the front?
Never grow up, was going through my head as I saw all of Taylor’s young fans eagerly awaiting her to come out. The size of the crowd was really quite something at this point. With expectations running high, the organizers tested the electric window that slides up and down from where Taylor is supposed to come out. The expectation is mounting, and the crowd just grows and grows. I keep hoping in the back of my mind that there’s a chance to even get a picture from Taylor but it’s getting pretty crazy. The warnings are starting to get a bit silly now: “Don’t take pictures, don’t talk amongst yourselves…” Apparently this might have been audio that was getting filtered from the inside of the building. I hope that’s what it was because you can’t really ask a crowd not to take pictures or talk. But finally 5:30 hits and a few minutes go by before…
On a history page, was that moment that the glass and the curtain opened up and Taylor appeared in front of a lot of Swifties gathered on the cold street. At that moment, a million cameras went up and I was lucky enough to get two steady shots that didn’t come up blurry. The screaming was on, the flashes are going off, and the crowd went wild. You can’t really describe the first moment that Taylor walks in a room. It always seems so surreal that she’s there, and she’s actually real. I’ve seen her twice on stage and even much closer than this but it always seems that I’m seeing her for the first time. She’s given a microphone but I can’t make out the words at all. I can’t even take more shots because all I get is cameras and signs. The crowd is continually pushing and shoving and we’re unable to see Taylor anymore.
We will be remembered, is what I believe the lucky people in front are thinking as Taylor leaves. We don’t really see her leave in the back. There’s hands up, a big sign, and even the paparazzi who are standing in a tall perch in the back are complaining about the lack of visibility. A poor girl’s sign is almost knocked over and is pulled to the back. Time which seemed to take forever and advanced at a crawl seems to have sped up. Ask any Swiftie who went to the Fearless Tour – time moves fast once Taylor is on the scene. I don’t notice the 30 minutes are up until of a sudden, the crowd stops its pushing and shoving. It’s that moment in which everyone who’s been standing there feels cold again. Taylor is gone. Time is unfair. Life has to return to it stupid normality. We have to go to school. We have to go to work. We have to go without Taylor again. Some fans are happy to have had a moment, some crying for the lack of one, some are happy and crying at the same time. One thing is certain though: the Outspoken One will return. And we’re all going to be there.
