Dance Like No One’s Watching: Why Taylor Swift’s Apple ads sound so familiar?

Whatever Apple is paying her is too little, Taylor Nation.

The idea behind Apple Music is not new. As a matter of fact, Apple is but the last kid on the block for streaming music services. With names like Spotify, Google Music, iHeartRadio, SoundCloud, Tidal and Amazon already in the market, it seems to face an uphill battle. I gotta give them credit for a marketing department that decided to bring in none other than the Blonde With The Sparkly 1989 Microphone. Yes, probably each ad required a ton of input but you and I know that Taylor’s input is in there. Taylor has described how much her mother gets nervous about her using the treadmill (odds are she’s flat out ban it from T’s condo nowadays). You probably have recognized she must have had a pick in the soundtrack.

Specially the last one. That’s The Darkness with “I Believe In A Thing Called Love”. Old school fans might feel a pang of nostalgia.

Why does it sound familiar? Because Taylor has used this song before as the soundtrack for one of her vlogs back when she first visited London, UK.

Remember the previous ad? This is “The Middle” by Jimmy Eat World. There’s that nostalgia again, why?

Why does it sound familiar? She’s sang this live with Jim Adkins from Jimmy Eat World during the Speak Now tour in Phoenix, Arizona back in October 22, 2011. She even had some of those lyrics on her arm. Here’s my own post from back then (yeah, I’m my own source for this one). And here’s a video clip!

So finally, we’ve got Taylor on the treadmill (I call it the “dreadmill” because I twisted an ankle on one and I’m not climbing on that device again, thank you very nope) signing “Jumping” by Drake. She’s never covered this song.

Although Tay is a fan of hip hop, and of Drake – but she’s kept her distance from covering hip hop to a certain degree. It does seem like the kind of song she’d sing in private for sure. And that treadmill fall… Didn’t Andrea once warned her daughter about the dangers of treadmills? I can’t find the reference yet, but I’m sure it’s out there.

Up next, the Billboard Music Awards. And yes, Taylor is still on her break.

Coming up next in the Calendar:

  • May 22: The Billboard Music Awards are broadcast LIVE at 8pm ET on ABC from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Taylor Swift is nominated for eight awards.
