Weekly News Update: October 30, 2017

I can’t say anything to your face, Taylor Nation.

Well, I could but I would spend years traveling so I decided writing would be easier. Here at the Swift Agency, just a guy who’s not going to make it in comedy any time soon, we should have started writing this sooner. It’s past the weekend now, so I’ve had to slightly alter the name of this feature now. Let’s see what happened this past week:

  • The video for … Ready For It? appeared on Thursday and blew everyone’s minds. You wouldn’t expect a ton of sci-fi iconography from the Sparkly Dressed, but that’s what you got.
  • The writing on the walls sometimes refers to Taylor, sometimes to her director and sometimes to what sounds like lyrics from tracks we’ve heard a few we haven’t. There’s a chance some will come up in the album on new tracks.
  • Although there’s consensus that we’re seeing the new vs. old Taylor in the video, their interaction has more interpretations. Some see it as a confrontation. I think it’s more as a reinvention.
  • Taylor has not put negative connotations about the media in the video, but some media are going off on what fans have said. Yes, I know: not all media and all that. And yes, I think mainstream media sometimes gets it wrong, but at the same time I do believe in freedom of speech. I am somewhat an independent media outlet of sorts, even if it’s just an online blog.
  • The white horse. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Joseph Kahn decided to troll everyone and just put a horse in there to confuse people. You could allude it to the horse in “Blank Space” and say there’s a connection there.
  • The lightning… I’d love to think this is a reference to Sparks Fly, but I’m probably wrong. It’s just Taylor learning to channel her power.
  • Eleven days, people. ELEVEN DAYS. Get some sleep, you’ll need it.
  • UPDATE! Taylor Swift will be the musical guest on Saturday Night Live on November 11.

Coming up in the Calendar:

  • November 10: Reputation, the new album by Taylor Swift is released!
  • November 11: Taylor Swift will be the musical guest on Saturday Night Live. Yes, I know I just added it as an update right above, but it’s the Calendar. I gotta write it again.
  • November 12: Taylor’s nominated for the MTV EMA 2017. You can vote for Taylor Swift for Best Artist, Best Look, Best Pop, Biggest Fans, Best Video, and Best US Act.

Review Corner: Liz Huett’s h8u. The new single is out!

lizhuett_2017-Oct-27
I think it’s pretty obvious I need a drink right now.

That’s one of the best lines to begin a song. Liz Huett’s new single, h8u is out! The beautiful and talented Nashville-via-California girl has a little anti-status-quo rebel streak of a troublemaker going on. Let’s be honest, she always did. Don’t get mad at me, Liz!

Is it possible that I like this one even more than STFU & Hold Me? Yes, I do.

I can’t help but read something into that line “I know that I’m petty” as a not-so-veiled homage to Tom Petty, because there’s influences of him throughout the song’s performance. Perhaps I’m way off. Yes, that must be it. What do I know.

Coming up in the Calendar:

…Ready For It? The Music Video is out!

Let the games begin, Taylor Nation.

So it was literally in the middle of the night, but the video is out. Let’s go to the video and we’ll go all comment-y just right after.

Watch it on YouTube

There’s a ton of movie tributes here for sci-fi properties like Ghost In The Shell, Blade Runner and Tron, but besides the ton of graffiti that people will endlessly pause to read (I definitely saw the 89 and 91 there) let’s see what grabbed my bionic eye on the first run. There’s two Taylors, one is the outsider hiding in the shadows and one is the encased in a glass display.

The one inside is all about image. There’s power there but it seems contained. The one outside seems to empower the imprisoned one to come out. There’s a price though. One “dies” so that the other may be free. One loses her identity (her face) so that the jailed one can be released. One was free, but kept herself covered, elusive. She gives herself up so that the one on display has her turn to shine.

I can’t help but draw parallels to Taylor balancing out her private and public personas. One will no longer be seen as Taylor, the other might be a little too powerful to be contained. There’s something inherently sad about that dynamic. Did I go too deep?

Perhaps I need another look 🙂

Ready For It: the music video drops Thursday Oct. 26!

I know you can’t come to the phone, Taylor Nation.

Oh well, there’s always voicemail. Here at the Swift Agency, just another Canadian that knows winter is coming, we were going about our business today until we got word that Joseph Kahn had posted a little trailer. Naturally we expected a fish and chips commercial and… this is not exactly that.

What it looks to be is a movie that draws inspiration from some scifi properties such as Tron and Ghost In The Shell. Yes, specially that last one. We only have to wait until… Thursday. Until then, here is the trailer.

Weekly News Update: October 22, 2017

I did not make fun of the way you talk, Taylor Nation. Honest!

Here at the Swift Agency, just a guy who’s literally trying to use the word figuratively instead, we’re happy to hear all the stories of fans that have met Taylor Swift lately.

  • New track “Gorgeous” has been released and is available to you for purchase on iTunes or for just listening in on Spotify and Apple Music.
  • “Gorgeous” feels calmer than “…Ready For It?” and “Look What You Made Me Do” and could be more sonically close to the average song of the album. I find it less experimental as well, it doesn’t have any sharp hooks on it. That’s perfectly fine, not every song needs to be a dance number.
  • That being said, it does have that line about going home to her cats… So lyrically, that’s the first time she’s kinda mentioned them (not by name though).
  • The Secret Sessions for secret album Reputation have continued on Taylor Swift’s home in Rhode Island. On that note, please be respectful if you haven’t got an invite and discreet if you have. In doing so, more people can meet Tay.
  • Taylor has been actively responding and retweeting fans on social media, specially Tumblr.
  • Five years ago, Taylor Swift released her fourth studio album named Red. As a side note, I was one of the fans who started calling it RED with all capitals because I thought it highlighted the name better.
  • Nineteen days until November 10.
  • WAIT… NINETEEN DAYS UNTIL NOVEMBER 10! AHHHH!!!

Coming up in the Calendar:
