The Tonight Show had been on hiatus after Jimmy Fallon lost her mother, Gloria. Fittingly, Taylor Swift’s performance was a subdued but powerful one. Jimmy had delivered a eulogy for his mother with the coincidence that he recalled a childhood memory in which she squeezed his hand three times to signify “I love you”. And if you’ve already committed “New Year’s Day” to heart, there’s that line “Squeeze my hand three times in the back of the taxi.” You’ll then understand why the hug at the end is so emotional.
