Review Corner: Liz Huett’s Responsible

Sometimes it hurts living so rock n’roll, Lizettes and Lizards.

The beautiful and talented Liz Huett has brought us another tale of woe and an amazing song with her new song “Responsible“. It’s very close to the lyrical female equivalent to Tom Petty’s “Rebel Without A Clue” with a dash of “Free Fallin'”. Liz song choices may not be specifically country, but they are all tales – funny, sarcastic and full of satire and wit. It’s no wonder that I end up comparing her style to Petty, because that’s how most of his songs went.

“This is looking like a shit show,” sings Liz. She’s not apologizing or making excuses but she does give out one disclaimer: “In my defense it all looked so glamorous last night.” Guess that might sound like an excuse, but it’s so poor and ill-conceived that it just seems to doom the poor girl in the song even further.

I lost it at the “Where is my purse?” line and fell down laughing. That’s a whole night of bad decisions revealed in one question. Even when our would-be-responsible heroine seems to have a saviour by the name of Amy, she sinks herself further: “She’d probably come and get me, but I don’t know the address.”

With the song starting all about Bourbon and eyelashes, one could make the easy reference to early Kesha’s “Tik Tok” and a trainwreck-like persona. I may be biased but I don’t think that’s what Liz is going for. Instead, I’m noticing a whole brand of personas she’s been adopting. They’re all part of the modern day fairytale american girl: dangerous, carefree, jealous, passionate, spiteful, hopeful, careless… and certainly not responsible.

I think what we’re getting on each new track is a new aspect or personality of real young women. Imperfect, flawed, biased and with an agenda. Rather than a stereotype you could easily fit inside a box, each new character embodied by Liz has its charm and a personality full of quirks that gives them depth. It’s almost like Liz is taking on every girl role that has never been given its time in the spotlight.

The result is an anthem to young wild heart of a girl making huge mistakes all over the place. I don’t know who the person in her phone is, but I really hope she finds her purse.

Sooo Liz… Can we get an album yet?

Review Corner: Liz Huett Don’t LV U Anymore

The beautiful and talented Liz Huett has a new single out. “Don’t LV U Anymore” is Liz’s second single of 2018. There’s a very quiet and minimalistic feeling to it, with Liz’s soothing voice dominating all throughout. Even when she whispers in the background, she seems to be pulling at the heartstrings.

The lyrics are about heartache, a soured relationship gone awry, but there’s a few lines that feel a little too close to real. “I don’t run to your friends to get them on my side when we fight anymore,” she sings. It’s less corny and more human as depictions of heartbreak stories go. The second verse even talks about playing songs for her ex, a personal note that speaks a lot about how close this song is to Liz.

The lyrical choices of all the singles she’s released are interesting. They’re setting an identity for herself as more of a songwriter/songstress of note. Pop singers are often trying to get that jingle radio-friendly song that makes you want to dance and sticks in your head. Liz seems to be going for more of what the song’s content is made of, both musically and lyrically. She’s taking a risk, she’s not pandering to any particular crowd, and I think she’s going for a more musically seasoned audience.

Here at the Swift Agency, just a guy who’s seen a few musical seasons, we couldn’t love her anymore for it.

Review Corner: Liz Huett covers You Don’t Know How It Feels

Liz actually knows how it feels.

Hello Lizettes and Lizards! Here at the Swift Agency, just a guy who’s got some delayed posts still being written, we’ve been made aware that ninjas don’t write. They’re still good at disappearing when there’s work to do and eating up all the cake, but as it turns out these are not things that are particularly useful to maintaining a blog.

But let’s get to why we’re all here, shall we? Take it away, Liz!

The inimitable Liz Huett has just released a new song, a cover version of “You Don’t Know How It Feels” made famous by Tom Petty. The song is recognizable, albeit the lyrics of the first verse have differences, but there’s something about the way it sounds that gives it a different edge, a compromise with the song that makes it personal. This could be just Liz’s talented voice but the I also believe it’s a shift in tone. You truly believe both lyrics and melody as intentional and as driven as it she had written them herself.

Is it cool that I said all that, Taylor Nation?

Here at the Swift Agency, just another guy who lives in the North Pole Canada, we’re still reeling from the begging of the Rep Era. So, what did we get this week?

  • Update! Taylor’s sixth studio album, reputation (which all promos keep in lowercase) sold 1.216 million copies in the first week! Debuting at the top stop of the Billboard 200, it’s the best selling album of 2017 according to Billboard.
  • The album came out on November 10, 2017 meaning it’s not going to be eligible for the award season just starting right now. Perhaps some nominations might befall the first singles of the album, but we’ll have to wait a year for the album to be eligible.
  • The tour has been announced. It’s officially called Taylor Swift’s reputation Stadium Tour. I’ve already ranted about the possibility this might be a stadium-only tour.
  • If you are interested in pre-sales, you should make an account on Taylor Swift Tix if you haven’t already. You have until November 28. If you do, your pre-sale dates are scheduled between December 5 and December 8. Remember all this information is subject to change, so keep checking TaylorSwift.com and Ticketmaster.
  • The American Music Awards are happening right now. Taylor didn’t have any nominations, but she made a brief video appearance as part of a salute to Diana Ross.
  • Our favorite Partner in Crime, the inimitable Liz Huett, has a released a new music video for h8u. I promise you’ll love it.

h8u: Liz Huett releases new music video!

I think it’s pretty obvious that I need drink right now.

Lizettes and Lizards, the inimitable Liz Huett, your Loveliest Partner in Crime, is killing it. Liz released a new music video yesterday for her latest single “h8u” and if you think she was the Bonnie to your Clyde for “STFU and Hold Me” she’s going all in for this one.

I’ve said it before, but there’s a lot of love for Tom Petty in the track and I feel a vibe for his style on the video with those glasses 😉

I know some are tempted to draw comparisons to the “Speak Now” wedding theme, but there’s a major difference. “Speak Now” was about a wedding being interrupted. Liz’ takeover is more of an invasion. She’s not here to steal the groom. She’s here to wreck the place. And you know you love it.

On other news, Caitlin Evanson is touring with Shakira!!?!! They’re going places, I tell you. We’re overdue for an Agency update soon.
