Names: Raymond James Mason
Ray Mason is a multi-instrumentalist focusing on trombone who freelances in the New York City Area. Born and raised on Long Island, Ray took to the trombone from a young age and soon moved to NYC to study both classical performance and jazz studies at NYU. After studying with artists such as Brian Lynch, Lenny Pickett, Alan Ferber, and Elliot Mason, Ray found himself in demand as an artist in a myriad of genres. In addition to trombone, Ray plays tuba, euphonium, trumpet, french horn, keyboards, ukulele, zourna, and sings. He can also play a mean cowbell.
Ray has performed with or can be heard on recordings with Barry Gibb, Weezer, My Morning Jacket, Elvis Costello & The Roots, Deer Tick, Cage The Elephant, Mark Ronson, The String Cheese Incident, Bob Mould, Mike Gordon (Phish), Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child, Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings, Menahan Street Band, Lee Fields and the Expressions, Abigail Washburn, Kenny Werner feat. Joe Lovano and Judi Silvano, The Mingus Big Band, SNL Band Director Lenny Pickett, GRAMMY Award-Winning trumpeter Brian Lynch, Michael Henderson, Gary Bartz, Hoodie Allen feat. Ed Sheeran, Sugar Hill Gang, and many more.
He has played trombone with Antibalas, a Brooklyn-based afrobeat group on Daptone Records who has been bringing their music inspired by Fela Kuti and Eddie Palmieri across the globe for 15 years. He’s also been the trombone player for FELA! The Musical, performing with the Tony Award winning show on its a most recent tour of the US for the first six months of 2013.
