The Cavendish Beach Music Festival: Lady Antebellum

The last day of the Cavendish Beach Music Festival was completely different to the other days. It rained harder and kept pouring throughout the day turning the grounds into a mud bath.

Notorious bands opening for the day were the Road Hammers, who not only played a great set with humor but also one of their members actually went into the crowd and surfed into the mud. Jack Ingram who was the main opening act before the headliner decided to actually sing out in the rain for his whole set. You might remember Jack as he’s also signed by Big Machine Records, Taylor’s label. Both Taylor and Jack are featured in a video promo for a reality show based on the beginning of Big Machine Records that never aired.

But it was up to the members of Lady Antebellum, Charles Kelley, Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood as well as their band, to weather the brunt of the downpour. Charismatic and very much in good spirits, they had no trouble in winning the crowd and come off as troopers despite the inclement weather. Hillary made a joke at some point of having picked up the wrong shirt to wear tonight.

Lady Antebellum performed a set list rich in hits. Stars Tonight was the opener and a great crowd pleaser since you can start singing along shortly after hearing it the first time. Not that anybody in the audience didn’t need any reminders. I could tell everybody in attendance knew almost every song performed.

Love Don’t Live Here Anymore is a well known hit from their first album and was sung by everyone in attendance. Charles announced they would not be doing their usual set list but go with what they feel the crowd would like to hear (he did added they would cover their hits which made me feel better).  I believe it was at this time they chose to sing Tom Petty’s Free Falling.

The mood was set for Perfect Day and later on American Honey which are slow songs but songs of summer still. Of those only American Honey is a single, but Perfect Day really needs to be.

Our Kind of Love brought up the mood back up, in time for Lookin’ For A Good Time. They closed with Need You Now and said their goodbyes.

Yeah, right. Of course they came back. Anyway, for the encore they sand I Run To You and finished the night with The Beatles’ Hey Jude which reveals their musical influences.

Missing from probably a longer version of their set was Hello World, which I’d love to see live. Not only do I love that song but I’ve heard interviews about the way they use lighting to convey the momentum as the song builds to a crescendo. Anyway, it’s not a single or one of their most known hits.

Crowd’s favorites were Need You Know with Dave playing a full piano in the middle of the stage, rain dropping right on top, and I Run To You which was one of their first popular hits.

Charles is specially dynamic and moved around to the very edges of the stage where he could walk. Both Hillary and Dave were also considerate enough to cover the other corners giving fans a close up view.

I sang every song. I recommend when you go to your first or next Lady Antebellum concert you do the same. You won’t regret it.

And now courtesy of Lady Antebellum’s YouTube channel, here’s some scenes from their performance at the Cavendish Beach Music Festival in Prince Edward Island! They later stayed to perform onsite for Regis and Kelly which are spending the week in the island to air their show from there live.
