The CMT Awards Recap

The Fearless One didn’t win in any of her nominations. Tay doesn’t make music for the awards. She makes music because she likes music and she plays it because she has fans that sing her lyrics back to her.

The CMT Awards recognized the talents of Lady Antebellum for Group Video, Blake Shelton and Trace Adkins for Collaborative Video, Brooks and Dunn for Duo Video, Keith Urban for Male Video, Miranda Lambert for Female Video and Carrie Underwood for Video of the Year. My congratulations to all the nominees as worthy recipients and for the winners, I hope they enjoy their well deserved recognition.

The show had a few lot of problems. More than a few sound issues were apparent when someone took the stage. Kid Rock was already fighting with the teleprompter early on (he wasn’t the only one). Someone’s getting fired for all the bad jokes. And whoever had the brilliant idea of bringing the Jersey Shore on stage needs to update their resume.

Highlights of the evening I would say Brad Paisley, Keith Urban with John Mayer (with a small intro by the Fearless One), Carrie Underwood, Taylor presenting with Faith Hill and doing a little dance to Need You Now when Lady Antebellum won for Best Group Video. Lady Antebellum also closed the show with Stars Tonight in a great performance worthy of a better show.

Along the lines we got to see Taylor sporting her hair straightened out, which I’m sure will be analyzed, commented and CSI’ed to death in celebrity blogs and gossip websites tomorrow (for the record we like to think we fall under the first category) and a cute dress of the non-sparkly category. Also absent from her hand and/or wrist was the number 13 which is her usual charm (no, I’m not implying that’s why she didn’t win an award).

Fearless has been a great, excellent and the best possible thing that Taylor has written, produced, sung and based a tour on. However it has lived well beyond anybody’s expectations and it’s time to bring some new tracks in. Almost every nomination from every nominee was a more recent release. It’s time to bring out new material. While we await Taylor’s third album, let’s not forget she has some things coming up.

  • The 13 hour meet & greet in June 13.
  • The Hal David Starlight Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame on June 17.
  • Atlantis, Bahamas in June 19.
  • Nashville Rising: A benefit concert for flood recovery in June 22.
  • The Cavendish Beach Music Festival in July 10. I’ll be there.

If anything else comes along, I will update the Calendar accordingly.
