2011 VMAs: Mean gets nominated for Video With A Message

Okey, so it’s true. A new category has been added to the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. The Sparkly Dressed is now nominated for her video Mean for the new “Video With A Message” award. So the VMA’s go back in the Calendar. The date is August 28 at 8pm EST on MTV. Perhaps they listened to Katy Perry.

Although Reuters gives the new category the very generous title of “social activism” I tend to see the point behind the article at PopDust. Was it really necessary or just convenient?

Either way, the Outspoken One faces Love The Way You Lie by Eminem and Rihanna, as well as her friend Katy Perry’s Firework, the forces of Born This Way by Lady Gaga, the very powerful F*cking Perfect by Pink and Make It Stop (September’s Children) from Rise Against.

The voting will incline itself to internet fan domination, as usual. I can’t help but feel torn here. I am a Taylorgeek and I love the Mean video, but there are very good causes in the other videos as well (although I find the link from Love The Way You Lie to domestic violence a bit of a stretch). Personally, I find Pink’s F*cking Perfect has a very powerful message. If for example, MTV would consider donating money to the cause related to the winning video, then the decision would be political but as it stands it’s only an award. In the end, this is the VMAs and all – so as everything else, you’re free to vote for what you decide for whatever reasons you choose. Here’s where to VOTE.

August 28 happens to be the date of one of the Enchantress’ Speak Now Tour concerts in Los Angeles, California so she is not attending the event.

The Queen of Spark will be attending this Sunday’s Teen Choice Awards. Hope you cast in your votes! Voting ends today.
